Class One West Chinnock

We would like to tell you about a few changes that will be happening in class one next summer term beginning 23rd April 2019. As you already know, I will be reducing my teaching commitment to two days a week on Thursday and Friday and Miss Howell will be teaching Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Sadly, Mrs Robertson has decided to leave West Chinnock School and will be greatly missed. A new class one Teaching Assistant will hopefully be appointed at the beginning of the summer term.

Miss Howell will now be responsible for testing and setting the children’s weekly spellings and I will continue to set the children’s math’s homework. Therefore, spelling tests will now take place on a Wednesday.  The children will need to hand in their homework books every Wednesday; new sheets will be stuck into their purple homework books and will be handed back to the children on Thursday. We would like the children to continue to focus on learning their spellings, completing maths homework and reading at least three times a week. Thank you.

Our topic this summer term is “Dinosaurs.” We hope to go to the sea side at some point to do fossil hunting and learn about the life on the seashore and rock pool ecosystems.

We will continue to learn about the changes in seasons, what plants need to grow by growing plants from seeds including plant and animal life cycles. I will be teaching Science this term through some outdoor activities every Thursday afternoon. Please will you ensure that your child brings in a long sleeved top, long trousers, wellington boots and a pair of socks for this afternoon session.

As well as our daily literacy and mathematics sessions we are continuing to learn how to draw and paint, plus sculpting with pattern and texture. Later in the term in D.T. we will be designing and making 3D junk model animals. In Geography we will be learning about the human and physical features of our environment and I.T. this term will be based on multi- media including digital cameras, laptops and iPads.  Miss Howell will be teaching team games on a Monday afternoon outside on the school court and I will teach Athletics activities every Friday morning. As part of our Healthy Schools ethos the children will continue to have a daily 15 minute “Wake and Shake” session after the morning register to raise their heart rate and improve their general fitness. Please would you ensure the children keep their named PE kit in school all week – thank you.

Every Tuesday afternoon Mr Mitchell will teach the children music. Years 1 and 2 children can also join Mrs Hallett’s choir sessions after school on Mondays.

We will continue having a reading challenge with a large reading rocket display in our classroom. The children will collect a weekly sticker for regularly reading 3 times per week at home; this will be placed on/near our rocket display with extra monster points which will be added to their total weekly score.

The reception children’s sharing diaries will be sent home every Friday afternoon and we would like you to return them each week for updating, the same as last term.

Miss Howell’s sewing club will still be on Tuesday afternoons after school and I will restart Gardening club with the help of Mrs Bugler every Thursday this term. Club sign-up sheets for the year 1 and 2 children will be available on the (inside) noticeboard outside the school hall. Club places are allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

Thank you for your continued co-operation and we look forward to a very busy and enjoyable summer term ahead of us. We are attaching a copy of our class one summer timetable so that you know what is happening on a daily basis in class one.
